Qualcomm Unveils 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Extreme Gen 6 Chips With 5GHz CPU

Qualcomm has unveiled its new dual-flagship approach by introducing two high-end mobile processors at once: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. While both platforms deliver top-tier capabilities, the Extreme model is positioned as the highest tier, packed with advanced AI, gaming, and imaging features, while the standard Gen 6 offers flagship performance for a broader selection of premium mobile devices.

Next-Gen 2nm Architecture and 5GHz Clock Speeds

Joining the competitive 2nm landscape, Qualcomm's new chipsets are manufactured using TSMC’s second-generation 2nm node. Both variants utilize Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU layout, which features two Prime cores running up to a record-breaking 5GHz and six Performance cores operating up to 4GHz. This makes the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series the first smartphone platform to cross the 5GHz clock speed milestone.

Compared to the previous generation, the standard Gen 6 offers a 10% increase in CPU speed and up to a 37% improvement in CPU power efficiency. Meanwhile, the Extreme variant delivers a 13% gain in CPU performance over its predecessor.

Overhauled Adreno GPU and Gaming Features

Graphics handling has been upgraded across both chips. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 offers 35% faster GPU performance and up to 40% better power efficiency than the Gen 5. The Extreme version raises the bar with a 44% GPU performance jump alongside dedicated Adreno matrix cores to offload AI graphics processing.

The Extreme variant also features Adreno Neural Fusion, combining AI-driven frame generation, image reconstruction, and super-resolution to reduce total GPU load and yield up to 40% power savings in supported gaming titles. Gamers also benefit from Snapdragon Elite Gaming enhancements, including Game Quick Touch 3.0 for lower touch latency and support for up to 12GB of Adreno High Performance Memory.

Faster Storage and Next-Level On-Device AI

To keep read and write speeds fast, the standard variant supports UFS 4.1 storage, while the Extreme model adopts the next-gen UFS 5.0 standard. For AI tasks, both processors house a reengineered Hexagon NPU with a new Element Accelerator designed to speed up generative AI and transformer-based workloads directly on the device, with the standard model achieving a 14% NPU performance uplift.
