Meta has officially announced its latest virtual reality hardware, dubbed the Meta VR Glasses. Shifting away from bulky head-mounted displays, this new device adopts a streamlined sunglasses-style form factor paired with a pocket-sized external computing puck that offloads processing and battery power.
Design and Display Specs
Constructed using a durable magnesium alloy, the Meta VR Glasses weigh only 100 grams and sit comfortably over the ears without requiring an overhead strap. Meta is offering the frame in both small and large sizes to fit different users. The visual experience is driven by a 5K MicroOLED "Infinite Display" that delivers 2412 x 2288 pixels per eye, a pixel density of 37 pixels per degree, and a high refresh rate of up to 120Hz. This massive virtual screen functions as a personal cinema for high-resolution 3D movies, live sports broadcasts, and immersive VR180 content.
Performance and External Puck
To keep the headset lightweight, Meta relocated the core components to a separate wired puck. This module houses the high-performance Snapdragon Reality Elite chipset, accompanied by 12GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage. The puck also contains the battery, offering up to three hours of media playback on a single charge. Users can also keep using the glasses continuously while the puck is plugged in for charging.
Navigation and Ecosystem
Navigation on the device is centered around natural movements, utilizing two pairs of internal eye-tracking cameras alongside six external tracking cameras for hands-free operation. Users can navigate UI elements simply by looking at them and pinching their thumb and index finger together. Physical controllers remain an option for gaming, though over 75 titles are tailored specifically for hand gestures at launch. Additionally, the glasses support the existing Meta Quest app catalog, Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming, and direct connections to gaming consoles or handhelds.
