Introduction and Overview
Sony launched its flagship WF-1000XM6 TWS earbuds about six months ago, positioning them as the top tier for sound quality, active noise cancellation (ANC), and call performance. As one of the most expensive wireless earbud options available, we spent substantial time putting them through their paces to see if they truly justify the steep investment.
Design, Comfort, and Fit
Design-wise, the WF-1000XM6 marks a clear departure from the older XM5 model, adopting a boxier shape with a clean matte finish. While the aesthetic looks refined, the charging case is noticeably larger and less ergonomic to hold or carry in tight pockets, creating a prominent bulge. The earbuds themselves feature a stemless design that feels modern, though they can look a bit pronounced in smaller ears.
Finding the correct seal takes some patience. Sony includes four distinct eartip sizes in the box. The medium foam tips come pre-installed, but achieving the best seal required using the companion app's Fit Check feature. In our testing, using an Extra Small (XS) tip on the left ear and a Small (S) tip on the right provided the best stability. The foam material must be squeezed before insertion and feels somewhat fragile, requiring extra care. However, the payoff in comfort is impressive: the earbuds can be worn continuously for nearly four hours without ear soreness, far outlasting typical in-ear models.
Controls and Durability
While the touch controls are intuitive, they are slightly overly sensitive. Gentle taps while adjusting hair or repositioning the buds can accidentally pause music or alter listening modes. Furthermore, the earbuds carry an IPX4 water resistance rating. This is sufficient for light sweat and minor splashes, but it requires caution during unpredictable downpours in places like Kathmandu.
Audio Quality
Audio performance is where the WF-1000XM6 excels most. Even at default out-of-the-box equalizer settings, the sound profile is strikingly balanced across vocals, instruments, and high frequencies. Combined with top-tier active noise cancellation, Sony maintains its stellar reputation in flagship personal audio.
