Apple HomePod mini 2 Launched with S10 Processor and Sound Glow
After nearly six years since the original HomePod mini debuted in 2020, Apple has finally refreshed its compact smart speaker with the HomePod mini 2. The upgraded device retains its familiar small, spherical form factor while delivering upgraded audio performance, better processing power, and new smart features.
Design and Color Options
Standing at just 3.3 inches tall, the HomePod mini 2 maintains a small footprint suitable for desks, shelves, or bedside tables. It features a two-tone, seamless mesh exterior designed for optimal sound transparency, topped with a tinted, backlit touch surface for volume and playback controls. It comes with a color-matched woven power cable and is available in five distinct shades: Midnight, White, Blue, Green, and Pink.
Upgraded Sound and Hardware
At the core of the HomePod mini 2 is Apple's S10 chip, replacing the older S5 chip found in the first-generation model. The speaker delivers rich 360-degree audio combined with computational sound technology to fill any room. For audio setup flexibility, users can pair two units for stereo left and right channels, or utilize AirPlay for multiroom audio. Additionally, home theater lovers can connect four compatible speakers—either four HomePod mini 2 units or four second-generation HomePods arranged in matching front and rear pairs—to the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K for a surround sound experience.
Smart Features, Sensors, and Sound Glow
The HomePod mini 2 functions as a smart home hub, giving users control over compatible thermostats, lights, and locks via Siri or the Home app. It incorporates built-in temperature and humidity sensors alongside a three-microphone array for voice commands. It also includes Sound Recognition to detect smoke or carbon monoxide alarm sounds and notify connected Apple devices.
A standout new addition is Sound Glow, an interactive lighting display on the top touch surface that syncs with music playback. It changes colors to match album artwork, pulses along with the bass and treble, and supports custom soundscapes.
Siri AI Integration
Future support for Apple's enhanced Siri AI is another key addition. This update will allow the voice assistant to hold more natural conversations, answer broader queries, and utilize personal context such as finding information in messages or updating shopping lists. However, Siri AI will not be available at launch; it will arrive via a future software update and require an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad, with feature availability depending on region and language support.
