Apple has officially introduced the AirPods 5 in two different versions, bringing active noise cancellation (ANC) to its open-ear lineup. The new earbuds keep the familiar stem-style open-ear design without silicone ear tips, catering to users who prefer a non-intrusive fit. Each earbud weighs 4.3 grams, while the standard charging case weighs 32.3 grams, making the overall setup lightweight and highly portable. While the open design allows better awareness of your surroundings, fit stability may vary based on individual ear shapes.
Durability and Audio Tech
The AirPods 5 bring an improved IP57 rating for dust, sweat, and water resistance on the earbuds, providing reliable protection during workouts or rain. Note that the charging case itself carries no water resistance rating. Under the hood, the TWS is powered by Apple's H2 chip, a custom high-excursion driver, a high-dynamic-range amplifier, and a new multiport acoustic architecture. Sound quality is continuously fine-tuned via next-generation Adaptive EQ to account for how the earbuds fit in your ears.
Smart Features, Microphones, and ANC
For audio immersion, the earbuds support Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. Crystal-clear call quality is supported by dual beamforming microphones, an inward-facing microphone, speech-detecting sensors, and Voice Isolation. Smart capabilities include hands-free Siri controls with head gestures and Live Translation when connected to a compatible iPhone or Apple device.
Notably, the ANC variant of the AirPods 5 claims to cancel up to 50% more noise than the AirPods 4 with ANC, effectively reducing constant background sounds like engine or traffic noise.
