Kathmandu Model Secondary School (Bagbazar) and Kathmandu Model College (Bagbazar and Balkumari) have jointly contributed Rs. 23,70,316 to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. The financial aid aims to assist families impacted by the devastating floods that hit the country on Bhadra 10.
In a deliberate effort to promote civic duty and empathy among youth, student committee representatives handed over the donation directly to Minister for Education, Science and Technology Sasmit Pokhrel, rather than sending senior administration officials.
Breakdown of the Financial Contribution
According to the institution, the overall amount includes an institutional contribution of Rs. 15,33,333 from the school and college management, Rs. 5,75,747 raised by teachers and staff members, and Rs. 2,58,250 collected by the students.
In addition to the central relief fund contribution, the student committee provided direct financial assistance of Rs. 51,000 each to four KMC students who lost their parents in the disaster. This targeted support was generated entirely through student-led fundraising initiatives.
Encouraging Civic Responsibility and Long-Term Recovery
Rameshwor Aryal, Chairperson of the Management Committee, noted that the disaster is a shared humanitarian issue that requires collective action. He explained that involving students directly in the handover process helps address their emotions while nurturing a culture of social duty.
KMC College Chief Surendra Subedi added that the institution's commitment will go beyond immediate monetary relief. KMC plans to support the reconstruction of damaged educational infrastructure and introduce long-term recovery efforts, including psychosocial counseling and teacher-exchange initiatives for affected communities. The institution has also pledged comprehensive academic support to its own flood-affected students to prevent disruptions in their studies.
