Former academic leaders of Tribhuvan University (TU) have recommended decentralizing operations and implementing structural reforms to enhance educational standards. Speaking at a special consultation program focused on the university's future direction, former rectors emphasized that Nepal's oldest and largest higher education institution must adapt to remain an appealing center for students.
Key Recommendations for Academic and Service Upgrades
During the interaction, Prof. Dr. Prem Raj Panta stressed the urgency of upgrading MPhil and PhD coursework while integrating contemporary subjects such as artificial intelligence, climate change, and sustainable development into the syllabus. To optimize human resources, Prof. Dr. Mahendra Singh suggested restructuring TU’s research hubs and consolidating overlapping administrative departments.
Focusing on administrative efficiency, Prof. Dr. Khadga KC advocated for delegating authority for transcript and certificate distribution to decentralized units. Expressing concern over campus disruptions, Prof. Dr. Sudha Tripathi called for firm measures against intense student politics, while Prof. Dr. Shiva Lal Bhusal highlighted the necessity of fully digitizing university administrative workflows.
Operational Reforms and Land Protection
The former leaders collectively urged the university to amend outdated TU regulations, reclaim encroached university land, and define clearer structural roles for entities such as the Curriculum Development Centre and the Monitoring Directorate. Furthermore, they advised managing activities at the TU Cricket Ground so that sporting events do not interfere with academic calendars.
Addressing the feedback, current TU Rector Prof. Dr. Anjana Singh assured that the recommendations provided by former leadership would be actively utilized to drive institutional growth and maintain academic excellence.
