OnePlus is officially making a major shift in its software strategy by replacing OxygenOS with ColorOS, starting with the upcoming Android 17-based ColorOS 17 update. Following a similar transition strategy seen with Realme, OnePlus is aligning its global smartphones and tablets directly onto OPPO's unified software platform.
Why OnePlus is Moving to ColorOS
The primary reason behind this transition is to streamline software development under OPPO's broader ecosystem. Instead of building and maintaining separate operating systems for different brands, standardizing on a single base software allows for more consistent, optimized updates across OnePlus, OPPO, and Realme devices.
This move isn't completely sudden. OnePlus smartphones sold in China have been running ColorOS for years. In addition, OxygenOS and ColorOS already shared a substantial portion of their underlying codebase, with differences primarily existing in the UI layout and region-specific software functions.
What ColorOS 17 Offers
The Android 17-based update brings a refreshed interface design, smoother system animations, and overall performance boosts. Users can also expect a new set of AI-powered capabilities designed to enhance daily usability across supported hardware.
Rollout Timeline and Availability
The official rollout for ColorOS 17 is scheduled to begin on October 29, 2026. Following the initial launch phase, additional eligible OnePlus smartphones and tablets will join the release schedule throughout the first quarter of 2027.
For many enthusiasts, OxygenOS was a main driver behind choosing a OnePlus phone due to its bloatware-free, near-stock Android approach. Transitioning completely to ColorOS marks a significant chapter for the brand, with its success relying heavily on how smoothly OnePlus implements the software experience for its global user base.
