MediaTek has officially announced its latest flagship smartphone processor, the Dimensity 9600 Pro, taking over as the direct successor to the Dimensity 9500. Positioned to compete with top-tier chips from Apple and Qualcomm, the new platform transitions to a 2nm manufacturing process and introduces major enhancements across CPU architecture, graphics, AI performance, memory, and camera capabilities.
Next-Gen 2nm Node and All-Big-Core CPU
Moving away from the 3nm process used for the Dimensity 9500, the Dimensity 9600 Pro is manufactured on a 2nm node to drive efficiency and speed. MediaTek continues its reliance on a non-traditional CPU design, foregoing small efficiency cores entirely in favor of a fourth-generation All Big Core setup.
The octa-core CPU utilizes a 2+3+3 structure built around Arm's newer C2 architecture. This configuration includes two Arm C2-Ultra cores running up to 4.55GHz, three C2-Pro cores reaching up to 4.35GHz, and three additional C2-Pro cores operating at up to 3.1GHz. MediaTek has also expanded the L2 cache size by 21% over the prior model.
For comparison, the older Dimensity 9500 featured a CPU design with one C1-Ultra core, three C1-Premium cores, and four C1-Pro cores capped at 4.21GHz. Thanks to the extra Ultra core and updated core architectures, MediaTek promises up to 17% higher single-core performance and 15% better multi-core performance. Power efficiency sees an even bigger jump, with claimed improvements of up to 37% in single-core tasks and 61% in multi-core workloads.
Graphics, Ray Tracing, and Neural Architecture
For graphics, the chipset upgrades from the previous Mali-G1 Ultra MC12 to the new Arm Mali-G2 Ultra NX GPU. The company highlights up to 27% higher peak GPU performance, alongside a 24% boost in power efficiency under peak loads. Ray-tracing speed has also been improved by up to 18%, with the hardware capable of delivering native gameplay frame rates exceeding 185 FPS depending on title optimization.
The GPU leverages Arm's Neural Graphics Architecture, enabling deeper integration between the GPU and NPU. This collaboration aids both standard rendering tasks and AI-driven enhancements like super-resolution. Additionally, the Dimensity 9600 Pro supports hardware-accelerated OMM ray tracing with multi-material reflection pipelines, which should enhance visual quality and sustained gaming stability in thermal-restricted mobile environments.
Memory, Storage, and AI Camera Processing
On the memory front, the platform supports next-generation LPDDR6 RAM—offering up to 33% higher effective memory bandwidth at identical frequencies—and UFS 5.0 storage, capable of doubling the read and write performance of UFS 4.0 standards. Smartphone makers retain the flexibility to utilize LPDDR5X RAM if preferred.
Finally, camera capabilities are managed by MediaTek's AI Imaging Fusion Architecture, designed to link the ISP and NPU more tightly for fast, AI-assisted photo and video processing.
