The Ministry of Education and Sports has issued a nationwide directive calling for strict monitoring and legal action against community school teachers and staff participating in political activities. Following reports and social media evidence of educators taking part in partisan programs, Minister Sasmit Pokharel instructed relevant authorities to enforce existing legal provisions to maintain professionalism in public education.
Action Initiated in Baitadi District
In response to the ministry's instructions, the Education Development and Coordination Unit (EDCU) in Baitadi has formally communicated with all 10 local governments in the district. EDCU Head Dasharath Datt Bhatta urged local municipalities to investigate whether school employees are attending political party functions. The directive emphasizes taking legal action under the Education Act, Education Regulations, and the teacher code of conduct if educators violate these standards. A copy of the correspondence has also been forwarded to the Education Ministry.
Sindhuli Identifies Specific Violations
Similarly, the EDCU in Sindhuli has urged local governments—including Dudhauli Municipality, Sunkoshi Rural Municipality, and Tinpatan Rural Municipality—to take prompt action against political involvement by school personnel. Undersecretary and EDCU Chief Dinesh Prasad Devkota highlighted that social media posts revealed the active political participation of four individuals: Prem Prasad Bhattarai, Sarveshwar Koirala, Arjun Kumar Gautam, and Yatiraj Timalsina.
The unit noted that such political involvement contradicts the Education Regulations, 2059 (Tenth Amendment). Local authorities have been asked to take necessary disciplinary measures against the named staff and any others found breaking the code of conduct.
