Sony introduced the WF-1000XM6 around six months ago as its top-tier flagship true wireless earbuds, boasting high-end audio, stellar noise cancellation, and impressive call clarity. After spending extended time testing these premium earbuds, we evaluated whether their performance justifies their high cost.
Design and Wearability
Moving away from the look of the older XM5, the WF-1000XM6 sports a understated matte finish with a boxier look. While the clean aesthetic is appealing, the charging case is noticeably larger and boxier than standard earbud cases, creating a prominent bulge when carried in a pocket. The earbuds themselves use a stemless form factor, which looks sleek though it can appear somewhat large in smaller ears.
Fit and Extended Comfort
Getting the proper seal requires some experimentation. Sony includes four sizes of foam eartips, with the medium pair pre-installed. Because the foam material requires compression before insertion into the ear canal, users must handle them gently to avoid wear and tear. Utilizing the Fit Check feature in the companion app helps determine the ideal size; using an extra-small (XS) tip on one side and a small (S) tip on the other created the proper fit. Once fitted, wearability is remarkable—allowing for nearly four hours of uninterrupted listening without ear fatigue, which is significantly longer than the typical two-hour limit of many competing models.
Usability and Build Concerns
On the functional side, the touch controls are responsive but almost too sensitive. Simple adjustments like adjusting hair or tweaking the fit can accidentally interrupt music playback or switch listening modes. Additionally, the earbuds hold an IPX4 water resistance rating. While this provides sufficient defense against sweat and light splashes, caution is advised during sudden downpours in places like Kathmandu.
Sound Quality
Audio performance remains the highlight of the WF-1000XM6. Even at default settings out of the box, the soundstage is exceptionally well-balanced, delivering clear vocals, distinct instrumentation, and crisp high frequencies seamlessly.
