Sony has expanded its audio lineup with the introduction of the Sony ECM-W5, a new wireless microphone system designed as an upgrade to the ECM-W3. Geared toward videographers and content creators, the kit includes two compact transmitters, a receiver featuring a touchscreen, and a charging case. Each transmitter weighs 27.1 grams and comes built with an integrated clip, a magnetic mounting plate, and a dedicated physical recording button that allows users to control capture directly from the microphone.
Design and Handling
The receiver weighs 35 grams and includes an intuitive touchscreen display for managing setting adjustments. It utilizes an interchangeable bottom adapter system, enabling creators to switch between Sony's Multi Interface Shoe for cable-free camera connections and a USB-C adapter for supported smartphones and computers. For outdoor filming, the system features a dust- and moisture-resistant construction.
Audio Quality and Features
On the audio front, the ECM-W5 supports 32-bit float recording at 48 kHz, providing flexibility during post-production to handle unexpected shifts in voice levels. Each transmitter includes 64GB of internal backup storage, holding up to 90 hours of local audio capture to prevent loss if the wireless link drops. When paired with compatible Sony cameras, the receiver can support up to four independent audio channels. While the standard package contains two transmitters, creators can purchase two extra ECM-W5T transmitters separately to record four individuals simultaneously.
Sound control features include Noise Cut digital processing and a Low Cut filter for wind and vibration noise reduction. Creators can also rely on Auto Gain Control or manually set input levels from −12 to +12 dB.
Range and Connectivity
The Sony ECM-W5 offers line-of-sight wireless transmission of up to 500 meters, with internal testing showing approximately three times the signal stability of the ECM-W3. The transmitters can also pair directly with compatible devices via Bluetooth. Additionally, the system supports real-time wireless audio monitoring with compatible Sony LE Audio headphones and provides timecode synchronization, including USB SYNC mode for supported cameras like the Sony FX5.
