In a major effort to improve public education, the government has set aside Rs 6.54 billion during the current fiscal year to upgrade and expand infrastructure across 109 major community schools in Nepal. Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel highlighted this initiative as a critical step toward reshaping the country's public school system and sustaining public trust in community institutions.
Targeting High-Capacity Institutions
The development scheme specifically focuses on 109 high-performing community schools that maintain an enrollment exceeding 2,000 students alongside a strong track record of academic results. By providing these prominent institutions with enhanced facilities, the government aims to address capacity challenges and support the growing student body choosing public education.
Phase One Funding and Building Plans
Under the initial phase of the initiative, Rs 5.34 billion has already been disbursed to 89 selected schools. Each institution is set to receive approximately Rs 60 million to construct a modern three-storey facility equipped with 12 rooms. These structures will feature state-of-the-art classrooms, fully functional science and computer laboratories, and well-stocked libraries to ensure a safer and more effective learning environment.
Addressing Disparities Across Schools
While acknowledging the positive trend of rising enrollment in major community schools, Minister Pokharel noted that certain institutions still face low student numbers. He emphasized that prioritizing large schools first is intended to diminish the resource gap between facilities. Ultimately, the government remains committed to upgrading physical infrastructure and academic standards across all community schools nationwide.
