Huawei has officially unveiled its newest flagship smartphone, the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max, alongside the standard Mate 90 and Mate 90 Pro models in China. Serving as the direct successor to last year's Mate 80 Pro Max, the handset brings significant upgrades in display technology, processing power, photography, and battery capacity.
Design and Durability
The Mate 90 Pro Max preserves the series' signature look with a large central circular camera housing on the rear. However, the back panel now sports a fresh dual-textured finish across its top and bottom sections. The device measures 8.4mm in thickness and weighs approximately 234 grams. It is available in four color options: Emerald Green, Rose Gold, Crystal White, and Obsidian Black.
In terms of durability, the smartphone utilizes Huawei's Kunlun Xuanwu architecture alongside Kunlun Glass 3, which offers a 50% improvement in drop resistance compared to the Mate 80 Pro Max. It also boasts dual IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water protection.
Display Technology
On the front, the phone features a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED screen delivering a resolution of 2848 x 1320 pixels. It comes with an LTPO dynamic refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, a 300Hz touch sampling rate, and 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming.
To handle bright outdoor conditions, the panel can reach up to 12,000 nits of peak brightness. It also features ambient light sensing and an ultra-low 1-nit brightness mode tailored for comfortable viewing in pitch-dark environments.
Performance and Software
Powering the device is the Kirin 9050 series chipset. The 12GB RAM configuration carries the standard Kirin 9050, whereas the 16GB RAM variants are driven by the higher-tier Kirin 9050 Pro. According to Huawei, this generation delivers up to a 31% overall performance increase over its predecessor. Memory configurations go up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage.
The Kirin 9050 Pro features a new 3D LogicFolding architecture and a Maleoon GPU supporting hardware-level ray tracing, enhanced frame stability for gaming, and a dedicated cooling system to regulate thermal levels under heavy loads.
For software, the device runs HarmonyOS 7, deeply incorporating system-wide AI tools via the Xiaoyi assistant. Key features include Xiaoyi Notes for organizing screen content, Xiaoyi Call Help for managing incoming calls, real-time language translation, call summaries, and system-level photo editing tools.
Camera and Battery
For optics, the Mate 90 Pro Max sports a triple rear camera setup. It features a 50MP main sensor with a variable f/1.4–f/4.0 aperture and RYYB technology, a 40MP ultrawide shooter, and a 200MP periscope telephoto camera designed for high-detail long-range capture. Keeping everything powered is a substantial 6,800mAh battery.
