After years of minor iterative updates, Apple has finally delivered meaningful hardware upgrades with the Apple Watch Series 12. Featuring an upgraded processor architecture, a redesigned Health Sensing System, and enhanced screen protection, this newest wearable feels like a genuine step forward, even as a few controversial features and global price tweaks raise questions.
Refined Build and Display Changes
At first glance, the Series 12 maintains Apple's iconic squarish chassis, crisp haptic engine, side buttons, and reliable dust and water resistance. However, the standard Aluminum model gets a substantial durability boost with Ceramic Shield 2 glass, which is reported to be 60% tougher than the previous Ion-X glass.
Alongside Aluminum and Titanium variants, Apple has brought back a luxurious Ceramic edition—though it carries a price tag higher than the Watch Ultra 4 itself. Side-by-side comparisons with the Watch Series 11 reveal that the Series 12 has a slightly smaller active screen area and a somewhat wider casing, making its display bezels visibly thicker.
S11 Processor and Memory Boost
The most impressive update lies inside with the new S11 silicon. Apple continues its scalable chip design approach, but while the S10 chip on the Series 11 was derived from the A15 Bionic (first seen on the iPhone 13), the new S11 chip shares its architecture with the A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro series. This upgrades the dual-core CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine significantly. To top it off, Apple doubled the system memory from 2GB to 4GB, offering massive performance headroom for watchOS 27 and future software updates.
Price and Privacy Concerns
While US pricing for the base model remains identical to last year, prices in international markets have increased. With the older Series 11 discounted by almost 50% in certain regions, buyers must weigh whether these performance gains outweigh the cost. Furthermore, the inclusion of continuous listening capabilities introduces significant privacy debates despite the power of the new Health Sensing System.
